epa08442508 This advisory is followed by a selection of 50 images illustrating the color black. It is part of a series called 'Colorful World,' which we are offering in the epa General Service over four weeks. \r\n\r\nBlack. One of the few achromatic, or hue-less, colors (along with white and gray), it results from the complete lack of light absorption. Fittingly, it is synonymous with darkness and represents the total opposite of white. \r\n\r\nIn Western cultures, it is frequently associated with concepts such as danger, mystery, witchcraft, evil and the unknown, therefore often carrying negative connotations. It is also linked to pessimism, sadness, depression, secrecy and seriousness. Black is commonly used to symbolize death, grief and mourning and is the default color worn at funerals in many parts of the world. \r\n\r\nHowever, it can also be connected to more positive notions like strength, authority, formality, elegance, seduction and sophistication. \r\n\r\nIt binds together various aspects of our physical reality: the pitch-dark night sky, the coal that fueled the Industrial Revolution, the glossy ink used in so much of our writing, printing and drawing, the ebony tinge of valued minerals such as obsidian, black onyx, black opals and black pearls. \r\n\r\nThroughout recent history, black has been prominently used by wildly differing political movements, including anarchism, radical Islamism and fascism â' most notoriously, in the uniforms of Mussoliniâs feared âblackshirtsâ and Nazi Germanyâs Schutzstaffel (SS) paramilitary corps. It adorns the jerseys of soccer clubs like Juventus Turin, AC Milan, FK Partizan, Besiktas JK or SC Corinthians, as well as the kits of New Zealandâs national rugby union menâs team, better known as the âAll-Blacks.â It is featured in the titles of famous songs by AC/DC, the Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson and Amy Winehouse. \r\n\r\nBlack, ultimately, can be found everywhere we care to look.
