The extraordinary congress of the National Liberal Party (PNL) met on 10 April, at the Parliament Palace, for the election of the new president after Florin Citu, the leader of the PNL and the President of the Romanian Senate, resigned from the party leadership a week ago. Ciuca, the only candidate for the leader position, has been elected as the party's new president. Out of the total of 1,120 votes cast by PNL members, 1,060 were for Ciuca, 60 were annulled and 159 votes were not cast, according to the results announced after the counting of votes. Nicolae Ionel Ciuca, 55, former Defense Minister, is a Romanian politician and retired general of the Romanian Army, who served in Iraq war as Chief of Staff of Romanian forces. EPA/ROBERT GHEMENT
