During the religious celebration of Epiphany, a priest throws a Christian wooden cross into the cold waters of the Black Sea to be found and brought back by young swimmers. The person saving the cross is blessed by the priest and becomes the city's hero for that day. Believers gathered for the mass, taking home small quantities of holy water, which, according to traditional popular belief, is supposed to have healing properties. EPA/ROBERT GHEMENT
