The Israeli army captured 1,200 square kilometers of the Golan Heights during the Israeli-Arab six days war in 1967. The Israeli Knesset (parliament) on 14 December 1981 passed the 'Golan Heights Law,' imposing Israeli law on the territory and the local population. Only five inhabited villages remain after the war in 1967, with some six-thousand citizens out of the 130-thousand who used to live in around 130 villages and 150 farms before the armed conflict, and that mostly fled to the Damascus areas in Syria.
