The Election Committee is an electoral college with the function of selecting the Chief Executive and, beginning in 2021, to elect 40 members the 90 members of the Legislative Council. In 2021 China's National People's Congress passed a law that changed the electoral system in the former British colony, augmenting the size of the Election Committee to 1,500 members to include 'patriotic groups' and members of the Chinese Peopleâs Political Consultative Conference among others. Only 364 places on the 1,500-member Election Committee are up for grabs with most seats predetermined as uncontested or appointed and only 4,889 voters representing different professions and trades casting their ballots.
