epa09385976 A view of a crowded beach on the last weekend before the mandatory entry into force of the 'Green Pass' certificate, in Ostia, near Rome, Italy, 01 August 2021. Starting from 06 August, in order to be allowed access to certain activities and services, everyone over the age of 12 in Italy needs to present a COVID-19 'Green Pass' health certificate -- which comes in digital or paper versions and is valid from the completion of the vaccination cycle -- or a rapid molecular or antigen test with a negative result for the Sars-CoV-2 virus (valid for 48 hours), or a certificate of recovery from Sars-CoV-2 infection (valid for six months). The so-called 'green pass' is advocated by the Italian government as the alternative to lockdowns in the light of the spreading Delta variant of the Sars-Cov-2 pandemic coronavirus.
