Descriere: epa09298168 A Sri Lankan man tries to remove a dead sea turtle washed ashore on the beach at Ratmalana in the suburbs of Colombo, Sri Lanka, 24 June 2021. Following the fire onboard the Singapore flagged MV X-Press Pearl on 20 May off the Colombo port and some of its containers falling into the sea, huge quantities of debris and especially pellets used for the manufacture of plastic, called nurdles, polluted the ocean and washed ashore along the western and north-western beaches of the island. Since then, more than 90 dead sea turtles, 10 dolphins, sea birds and fish have been reported washed ashore, according to the island’s Department of Wildlife sources. Marine and wildlife authorities are investigating whether there are any links between the marine deaths and the ship’s cargo. The Sri Lanka Navy, Coast Guard and other armed forces personnel cleaned the beach of the debris and have stored the cleared material in sealed stores for further investigations.
