Media reports state that Thailand's Digital Economy and Society Ministry (DES) on 20 January 2021, filed a criminal lawsuit against banned opposition politician Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit accusing him of defaming the monarchy for criticizing a palace-owned company in a bid to produce the vaccine against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. After last year a court ordered a pro-democracy opposition party to dissolve, Thailand has seen a wave of anti-government protests led by students that stretched to criticism of the Thai King's wealth, political role and personal life.
