Descriere: epa08573937 Youth play games or chat at a kids playing site, in Petrosani city center, 315 Km north-east from Bucharest, in Jiului Valley mining site, Romania, 14 July 2020. (issued 30 July 2020) In the framework of the EU's Green Deal, the European Commission will make available 7,500 million euros for the coal mining regions of the continent hit economically and demographicalLy by the destruction of jobs that led to the closure of the mines. 10%, 750 million, will go to Romania and especially to the Jiu Valley, the depression that runs through the Jiu river in the southern Carpathians and that was the engine of the national economy for decades thanks to the huge amounts of coal from its underground. Before the Romanian government gradually began closing its deficit and hyper-subsidized mines until the fall of Communism in 1989 in the late 1990s, there were 14 active mines in the Jiu Valley that employed more than 50,000 people. Today there are only four of those mines in operation that employ around 3,000 people and will be liquidated in the coming years.\r\nAccording to data from the Romanian National Statistical Institute, the population of the six mining towns that make up the Jiu Valley went from the nearly 170,000 inhabitants it had in 1997 to the less than 100,000 it has today, a drop of more than 40%.
