It is part of a series called 'Colorful World', which epa is offering in General Service over four weeks in May.\r\n\r\nSituated between the hues of red and blue is purple. Depending on its shade it is also referred to as violet or lilac. Purple is a secondary color, widely considered both energetic and relaxing and has a vivid and varied array of symbolism. \r\n\r\nIn the 15th century BC, citizens of Ancient Phoenicia produced a dye that came to be known as Tyrian purple. The process of making it was difficult and expensive, requiring thousands of sea-snail glands to be harvested for a comparatively small amount of dye. Due to the scarcity and cost of the Tyrian purple dye, it only graced the gowns of society's elites - such as royalty, nobles and senior priests.\r\n\r\nIn Japan purple dye is believed to have been obtained from a plant called purple gromwell, which was difficult to grow and made the dye hard to procure. During the Nara period (710â'784), a ranking system reserved purple colored clothing for the Imperial family, top ranked officials and monks only.\r\n\r\nBecause of purple's luscious palette, its rarity in nature and historic use by royals and high-ranked priests, the color still conjures connotations of luxury, regality, wealth and power.
