epa06746139 A handout photo made available by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) on 18 May 2018 shows an aerial view of ground cracks on Pohoiki Road during an overflight of the eruptive fissure area at about 7am Hawaii Standard Time (HST), Hawaii, USA, 17 May 2018. According to the USGS, cracks in the area continued to open and widen, some with horizontal and vertical offsets over the past 24 hours. These cracks are caused by the underlying intrusion of magma into the lower East Rift Zone. An eruption from the Kilauea volcano on 17 May sent ash 30,000 feet (9,144 meters) above sea level in to the sky. An ashfall advisory is in effect for the Ka'u District of Hawaii.
