The 28-year-old defendant Sergej W. is charged with attempted murder for detonating three homemade bombs next to the Borussia Dortmund team bus and their entourage when they travelled to a UEFA Champions League match against Monaco at the Dortmund Westfalen stadium on 11 April 2017. The bomb attack initially was assumed a terrorist attack but it was investigated that Sergej W. was had planted the explosive devices in an attempt to trigger a fall of the Borussia Dortmund shares on which he allegedly had betted before the attack.
