In 2010, Choukeir left Syria to escape censorship and decided to settle in France. On 28 March 2011 in Paris, he released the song 'Ya Haif' (meaning 'What a shame' in English) to denounce the actions of the Syrian regime after the first civilians were killed in Daraa city on 18 March 2011 at the beginning of a civil uprising against the Syrian government that turned into a civil war.
