Finland's first regional elections will be held on Sunday, 23 January at which regional councils for welfare areas will be elected. Until now, municipalities have been responsible for organizing social welfare, health care and rescue services. In the future, they will be the responsibility of the welfare areas. The welfare area has self-government, and the highest decision-making power in area matters is exercised by the regional council.
