Descriere: epa08671943 A Thai Buddhist monk inspects a monastery partially submerged and damaged by rising invading sea water at Wat Khun Samut Trawat Buddhist temple, also known as 'floating temple', at the coastal erosion community of Ban Khun Samut Chin village, off the shore of Samut Prakan province, Thailand, 15 September 2020 (issued 16 September 2020). For nearly three decades, the Ban Khun Samut Chin village has been threatened by an invading shoreline eroded at the average rate of three to five meters every year, forcing villagers to move inland as their homes and lands are swallowed by the waters of rising sea levels. For over 30 years since the sea water started encroaching the village, most villagers relocate their homes farther inland and away from the advancing sea while scores of families leave the area which affected the local school, as the number of students decreased from hundreds to five students in 2020. The village's Buddhist temple which, is partially submerged in sea water, has resisted calls to move as the four Buddhist monks including the abbot stay to battle the coastal erosion by building rows of bamboo and concrete poles on the shoreline to prevent further damage. Ban Khun Samut Chin is an idyllic fishing village imperiled by the country's fast eroding coastlines which are believed to be a result of the deforestation of extensive mangrove forest as well as the impact of climate change, causing the stronger waves and savagely monsoons.
