epa09958738 A metro station is filled with personal belongings of Ukrainians living here since the start of the Russian invasion in Kharkiv, Ukraine, 19 May 2022. Though Russian troops were recently pushed back by the Ukrainian army, many of the people cannot leave the metro as their homes have been destroyed by shellings. The situation poses a problem for the city as it cannot resume the metro's running. Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, has witnessed repeated airstrikes and had only recently been freed. On 24 February, Russian troops had invaded Ukrainian territory starting a conflict that has provoked destruction and a humanitarian crisis since. EPA/SERGEY KOZLOV
