TURKEY PHOTO SET SEX WORKERS DAY PANDEMIC COVID19epa09047966 Transgender sex worker Cansel (45) walks in Besiktas’ Eagle Square as she is looking for clients in Istanbul, Turkey, 23 February 2021 (issued 03 March 2021). Life for Cansel has never been easy. She's been a trans person since she was 20 years old and left her family behind. Sex work appears to her as the only option to make a living, with all the physical and mental hardships that come with it along with the fear of violence against trans people. Turkey has the highest transsexual murder rate over the past ten years in Europe with about 60 trans people killed, according to The Trans Murder Monitoring (TMM) report. The Covid-19 pandemic has added another deadly threat to the already difficult situation of Cansel. During the pandemic, the biggest challenge for sex workers is to interact with clients while at the same time being protected from catching the virus. Cam shows via social media are one way for Cansel to earn money without physically engaging with clients in the same room, though advertising sex workers' services work on social media is often met with immediate blocking for violating the providers rules. Cansel has been an activist for trans people's rights to some 16 years, and demands from the government to provide financial aid to the more than 150,000 sex workers. Financial aid for this area of work is subject to criteria highly unlikely to be met by sex workers. More difficult days await sex workers who are directly living under the threat of Covid-19.
