Descriere: epa09697947 An adult Black soldier fly, farmed at the Zihanga farm in Kabete, Kiambu, Kenya, 19 January 2022 (issued 20 January 2022). Zihanga, a waste recycling company and insect feed manufacturer founded by three young Kenyan men, began its operations in November 2020. The company recycles organic waste, including from animal waste from slaughterhouses and market food waste, using Black soldier flies (Hermetia illucens). Through the farming of the Black soldier flies, they get organic fertilizer and alternative protein that can be incorporated into animal feeds. The company says their products have been beneficial to local farmers and their livestock around as well as the environment by reducing the amount of waste that could potentially end up in rivers and streams. The young entrepreneurs also strive to create jobs for young people and train them, which helps improve their quality of life. They currently have employed six young men at the farm.
