This year, celebrations of the Scandinavian kingdom's national holiday are starkly different to the habitual revelry due to the ongoing pandemic of the COVID-19 disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. Patriotic decorations have come to the forefront, with the main gates of Oslo's Royal Palace adorned with hydrangea, birch and ribbons sporting the national colors (red, white and indigo blue). The holiday commemorates the 1814 signing of the Norwegian constitution that declared the realm to be an independent kingdom after centuries of dynastic union with Denmark.
