Due to the rain the official annual Bon Odori dance was cancelled. Obon is a more than 500-year-old Buddhist custom to honor a family's ancestral spirits. Held for three days every August 14th to 16th, the Obon festival has evolved into a family reunion holiday when people return to ancestral family places and visit their ancestors' graves. In some parts of Japan the belief still exists that the spirits of ancestors revisit the household altars during the three day Ogon season.
