Pilsner Urquell maintains a rare and historically significant tradition with its eight-member cooper team, a craft dating back to 1842. Once employing 150 coopers to manage hundreds of thousands of oak barrels, the brewery is now likely the only one globally still practicing this trade. These coopers are essential for maintaining the brewery's historic cellars, where the famous Pilsner lager ferments and matures in wooden barrels, ensuring the beer's consistent taste, unchanged for over 182 years. They meticulously repair and create both large lager barrels and smaller festive barrels, utilizing specific oak wood that has been dried for up to a decade.\r\n\r\nThe coopers' work is highly specialized, requiring precise techniques, such as pitching the large barrels with molten resin to disinfect them and prevent unwanted flavors. They use oak from slow-growing trees, ensuring dense, high-quality wood and each barrel takes five weeks to produce. This dedication to tradition and craftsmanship has earned the Pilsner cooperage a place on the Czech Republic's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and they are now pursuing UNESCO recognition, highlighting the unique and vital role they play in preserving the authentic Pilsner Urquell brewing process.
