Sang Taraash, the ancient art of stone carving in Kashmir, involves creating slabs for hamams (heating systems) used in mosques, large stones for wazas (chefs) to crush meat for the Wazwan feast, and stones for grinding spices and chutneys. Artisans also carve memorial stones for tombs. However, a mining ban imposed in 2019 has restricted access to devere stone, the primary raw material, causing many artisans to abandon the craft due to low income and resource scarcity.
