AFGHANISTAN REFUGEES

The Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation reports that over 170,000 Afghan refugees have been deported from neighboring countries between 01 April and May 2023, with the majority (128,000) coming from Pakistan, followed by more than 43,000 from Iran and 1,322 from Turkey. Additionally, over 3,300 Afghan prisoners were released from Pakistani prisons during this period. Many of the returning refugees are seeking permanent shelter in Kabul, with a refugee camp currently accommodating daily arrivals of 800 to 1,000 individuals. The UNHCR also indicates that more than 280,000 Afghans were deported from Pakistan and Iran in April alone. EPA/SAMIULLAH POPAL
